In my classroom we daily engage in Writing Workshop. The purpose of this workshop is to not just create writer's capable of passing the 4th grade Writing TAKS, but to foster a life long love of writing. To do this, we focus on the 6+1 Traits of Writing. The traits are Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions and the plus one is Presentation. We will learn about these traits through literature, teacher examples and student examples. We will look at both good and poor examples of what good writing looks like. Along with the 6+1 Traits of Writing, we will learn the Writing Process to help us develop as writers. The Writing process begins with Prewriting and then moves to Drafting. These stages are followed by Revising, Editing and Publishing. We work back and forth through this process to complete our writing.
So what will Writing Workshop look like in our classroom. Daily we will follow a schedule similar to the one below. During mini-lessons we will learn about the traits, writing process, grammar, and many other writing skills. Grammar will be taught in isolation at times and inside our writing at others. This will depend on the skill we are learning and where we are in our writing.
